We went to choose the dog together from a litter of 8 puppies. Due came towards me with playful curiosity. We could not but choose him. The breeder told me that he had already been promised to another family but I was adamant that it was Due or nobody, so the breeder accepted. Just to be sure, I wrote Due’s tattoo number down so I could check that he would not be swapped with another puppy.
Two days before I was due to collect my puppy, the breeder called me saying that Due had undescended testicle and that I could change my mind about taking him, or I could have a discount on the price we had agreed upon. There was no way I was going to change my mind about taking him home because of this!
That is how my beloved friend Due became my companion for 13 years. Unfortunately during the last 4 he suffered from a progressive problem with his hind legs. I contacted the dear Barbara Mapelli Mozzi who had taken wonderful care of him for numerous illnesses; he was a delicate dog and prone to intestinal problems. I asked Barbara to help make Due’s life dignified.
With great love and her extraordinary qualities, Barbara took care of his illness, relieved his suffering and postponed his death. We eventually had to put him down after 6 months when he was unable to stand up to eat or urinate.
I also decided to help Due preserve his dignity because this is what his eyes had been saying to me for some time. On that morning of October 28th, with a sweet sun on the horizon, Barbara arrived two hours before the vet. Barbara asked me to leave her alone with Due because she wanted to “prepare” him in her own way.
I went for a walk in the woods and when I came back Barbara told me that Due was very unsettled because I had not informed my ex-husband, from whom I had recently separated, what was going on. It was the truth, but Barbara could not have known. I called my ex-husband and told him; after the phone call Due seemed to be thanking us with his eyes for finally allowing him to run free in the fields in the sky.
The vet told me that she generally gave two injections but, after the first one, my dear Due slipped silently and gently away to his new destiny to join his group soul. Barbara covered him with a beautiful, soft blanket of flowers from the garden and we watched over him for a while. He seemed to be smiling.
At exactly the same time that Due was taking his leave a tiny, adorable red breast flew against the window and also died. We decided to have him cremated with Due and I added a Winnie The Pooh soft toy which had been Due’s for years and was the only toy in his whole lifetime which he had not nibbled away on.
I did not go the cremation, but Barbara did, and afterwards she returned with Winnie under her arm saying that Winnie had refused to be cremated, that he wanted to stay with me because he was going to have a new dog friend soon. I smiled, certain that I was not going to have another dog for a long time but something, which I would not call a coincidence, happened and on January 25th, a wonderful 8 year old Golden Retriever made its way into my life because his owners no longer wanted him.
This is another splendid gift from Due; before he died I said to him “My dear Due, I do not want any more dogs because I have suffered too much but if you think there is a dog that needs me, just point him in my direction!!”
